General Enclosure Overview PDF Print E-mail

A weatherproof type enclosure shall be provided to house the engine/generator and accessories.  The enclosure is to be in complete compliance with the National Electrical Code (NEC), and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) with regard to clearances around electrical equipment specified herein.  The enclosure shall conform to the following construction and design criteria as set forth.

• - Wind rating 150 MPH
• - Roof load rating 53 lbs. per sq. ft.
• - Rain test rating 4" per hour

Enclosure shall consist of a welded 2 inch square aluminum tube, 16” on centers, frame with pre-painted aluminum exterior skin, mill finish roof and mill finish extruded aluminum trim. The enclosure includes tie-down provisions for securely attaching the entire structure to the concrete base or fuel tank as specified.

Exterior wall cladding shall be 0.040 thick baked enamel pre-painted aluminum finish. Cladding is attached utilizing 3M Commercial Vehicle Tape.  The roof is framed with 2 inch square welded aluminum tubing on 16” centers. Roof panels are fabricated of .090 aluminum sheet and mechanically fastened to the entire perimeter. The perimeter is sealed with weather-proof caulking to prevent water intrusion. The roof is peaked to prevent water pooling and facilitate water run-off.

External drains with shut off valves are provided for radiator fluid and engine oil.

When a walk-in enclosure is supplied a minimum clearance of 24” shall be allowed for walkway space between the generator frame and interior side walls. A minimum walkway clearance of 36” shall be allowed between the generator end frame and the interior rear wall of the enclosure. The radiator front face shall be sealed with a .090 aluminum transition and a heat resistant composite material to prevent leakage of radiator air discharge and minimize vibration from the packaged generator set to the enclosure.

Standard enclosure exterior color is White unless otherwise specified. Many colors are available as an option.

Air handling shall be as follows:  Air will enter the enclosure through a punched panel via internal intake scoops, as required, for proper airflow to the generator set.   The cooling air inlet system shall prevent water intrusion into the enclosure with the generator set operating at full rated load while allowing for a maximum air flow.  Radiator discharge shall be through a punched grille.  Air discharge devices shall in no event restrict airflow. To ensure adequate airflow for cooling and combustion total static restriction over the entire system shall not exceed 0.50" H2O. Intake openings shall be covered with a punched panel to prevent the entrance of birds or rodents.

A minimum of five (5) single personnel access doors shall be provided on non walk-in designs or a minimum of two (2) doors shall be provided on walk-in enclosures that allow adequate working clearance within the enclosure.  One door shall be located in front of the generator main circuit breaker, as specified, to meet NEC code clearance requirements. The circuit breaker access door shall provide free open access to the breaker as required for proper operation and maintenance. Doors shall be manufactured of the same material as enclosure.  Doors shall be fully gasketed to form a weather tight perimeter seal.  Door hinges shall be full length stainless steel piano type and attached with stainless steel hardware. Door handles shall be corrosion resistant and shall provide for a lockable, secure entry point into the enclosure. Drip edge is applied above each entry door.

JRS Custom Fabrication shall provide all necessary hardware to internally or externally mount the exhaust silencer as specified. The silencer mounting points are designed to transfer the weight of the silencer to the side walls of the enclosure. This design prevents any weight of the silencer from bearing on the engine.  Silencer mounting hardware shall at all times maintain the weatherproof integrity of the enclosure system. An aluminum rain collar and rain dress shield shall be provided by the enclosure manufacturer.

Level 1 Sound Attenuated Enclosure 15 dba Reduction @ 7 Meters

The Level 1 Sound Attenuated Enclosure is designed and built to the above Weather Enclosure criteria with the following deviations: The radiator discharge air will discharge upward through a non-sound insulated bolt- on style plenum. Bird screen will cover the discharge opening. The sides and end walls of the enclosure will have 2” thick fiberglass sound attenuating material. All insulation is covered in perforated aluminum sheet. A critical grade silencer is recommended for this application.

Level 2 Sound Attenuated Enclosure 25 dba Reduction @ 7 Meters

The Level 2 Sound Attenuated Enclosure is designed and built to the above Level 1 criteria with the following deviations:

The radiator discharge air will discharge through a sound insulated integrated style plenum with side and end wall punched discharge openings.  All interior walls and the ceiling of the enclosure will have 2” thick fiberglass sound attenuating material. All insulation is covered in perforated aluminum sheet.

Level 3 Sound Attenuated Enclosure 30 dba Reduction @ 7 Meters

The Level 3 Sound Attenuated Enclosure is designed and built to the above Level 2 criteria with the following deviations:

The intake air will enter the enclosure through punched openings into an intake chamber with the air passing over a baffle wall. The radiator discharge air will discharge through a sound insulated integrated style plenum with side and end wall punched discharge openings. Additional baffling is added inside the discharge plenum.  A super critical grade silencer is recommended for this application.

Level 4 Sound Attenuated Enclosure 35 dba Reduction @ 7 Meters

The Level 4 Sound Attenuated Enclosure is designed and built to the above Level 3 criteria with the following deviations:

Sound levels are achieved utilizing a technologically advanced composite material consisting of a PVC barrier layer, polyether foam absorber layer, a PVC foam de-coupler layer and a black urethane facing. The composite weight and thickness is calculated based on the Sound Transmission Class specified.  The black urethane facing offers superior chemical resistance is non-absorbing and tear resistant.
